Stuart Grehan during last year’s Palmer Cup win over the USA
Maynooth University’s Stuart Grehan halved both his foursomes and fourball matches as Europe and the USA shared the spoils 5-5 after the opening day of the Arnold Palmer Cup at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Playing alongside Rory Franssen in the morning foursomes, the European pair came back from one down after four to take a two-up lead with three to play. But they lost the 16th to a birdie and the 17th to a par by Americans Sam Burns and Chandler Phillips and halved.
The session ended with the USA leading 3.5 to 1.5 but Europe hit back in the afternoon foursomes, winning three matches as Tullamore’s Grehan and Franssen halved with Nick Hardy and Norman Xiong.
The matches conclude with 10 singles matches today and tomorrow.
