Video: Remus Unveils Axle-Back Exhaust System for 2017 BMW 540i

A couple of things define BMW as a brand and among them you’ll find a special affinity for straight six engines. They’ve been a part of its DNA even before the company we know today was founded but today they have basically become synonymous with the blue and white badge. Even though they are no longer naturally aspirated, modern turbocharged mills still retain the some of the characteristics of their predecessors, including the sound they make.

The new BMW 540i comes with the latest 3-liter straight six engine developed by the Germans, in the shape of the B58 mill. Developing 340 HP and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, the silky smooth powerplant under the hood can easily handle the car’s weight be in sedan or Touring guise but that’s not what we’re here to discuss. We’re here to take a look and listen to what the guys from Remus have put together for it, a brand new axle-back exhaust that completely changes the tune of the Bimmer to be more precise.

According to them, the system is made of stainless steel and uses the standard vehicle’s actuator to switch between different driving modes and, obviously, sounds made by the exhaust. Therefore, customers will be able to make their car sound louder and more aggressive by simply using the BMW driving mode selectors located next to the gearshift lever. Unfortunately, the Remus exhaust apparently only works on cars fitted with the M Sport package and in conjunction with a M550i rear diffuser.

Prices for the axle-back exhaust start at €1,243.20 ($1,414) but can go up to €1,896 ($2,157) depending on the exhaust tips you prefer. The best part about it all is that the Remus exhaust still complies with the EU emission legislation which means you won’t get a ticket if the police pulls you over and starts asking questions about the mods you have installed on your car.
