Video: ESS Tuned BMW M5 Takes on Huracan on Drag Strip

As we’re sitting here, waiting for the new M5 to come out, we’re looking back at what the still current model brings to the table. The F10 BMW M5 may be called a lot of things but not a slouch in a straight line. Tuning it to deliver even more power literally transforms it in a land rocket and the guys from ESS Tuning surely know how to do that. Their kits add various amounts of power delivered to the rear wheels without affecting the reliability of the 4.4-liter V8 engine.

Even though their specialty is supercharging cars, they also offer tunes for turbocharged mills like the S63. The car in the video below is sporting a Stage 1 upgrade and therefore should be putting out around 700 HP and 680 lb-ft (921 lb-ft) of torque, numbers good enough to make you forget about the weight this thing has to carry around. Because yes, the F10 M5 isn’t exactly the lightest M car ever made.

The car it’s going up against though is a proper supercar, something BMW can’t claim to have in its stable these days. The Lamborghini Huracan comes with a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 making 610 HP and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque in standard guise. And while that may not look like a lot by comparison, the Italian thoroughbred is also considerably lighter, tipping the scales at under 1.5 tons.

So this should be a close call, right? Well, it would’ve been if the driver of the BMW also had all-wheel drive at its disposal. Even though the race is done from a rolling start the huge amount of power and torque going to the rear wheels caused the Bimmer to spin its wheels just enough to lose the start and give the win to the Huracan in the end. Sure, the M5 might’ve lost anyway but I’m pretty certain that if the start wouldn’t have been botched, this could’ve been a much closer race.
